TNEA 2026: Over 68,000 get tentative seats in third counselling round

Chennai, August 21: More than 68,000 students have received tentative seat allotments in the third round of the Tamil Nadu Engineering Admissions (TNEA) 2026 counselling process, held on Friday. The TNEA committee has directed these candidates to confirm their allotments through the official confirmation option by 5 p.m. on Saturday, August 22.

According to an official release, confirmation is mandatory. Failure to confirm a tentative allotment could result in its cancellation, the committee warned. This step is part of the standard procedure to ensure that only candidates who genuinely wish to accept the allotted seats proceed further in the admission process.

In this round, 68,640 candidates were given tentative allotments out of a total of 1,02,719 eligible candidates. A total of 1,06,583 engineering seats were available for this round of allotment.

In the first two rounds of TNEA counselling, the authorities had distributed 88,930 provisional allotments to students under both the general category and the 7.5% horizontal reservation for government school students. While the exact number of students who have completed the admission process so far is not immediately available, past trends indicate that a few thousand students typically drop out at various stages.

Context from previous years shows a pattern of vacant seats remaining after the admission process concludes. Last year, more than 30,000 engineering seats in the State remained vacant despite an enrolment rate exceeding 80%. In earlier years, the number of vacancies was closer to 50,000.

The TNEA counselling process is conducted by the Directorate of Technical Education (DoTE), Tamil Nadu, for admission to undergraduate engineering programmes in colleges across the state. Candidates are allotted seats based on their rank, category, and availability of seats in their preferred institutions. The tentative allotment gives students a provisional offer, which they must confirm by the specified deadline to secure the seat permanently.

Officials have urged students to carefully review their allotment details and complete the confirmation process within the given time frame. Any candidate who does not confirm will have their tentative allotment cancelled, making way for other candidates on the waiting list. Further rounds of counselling, if needed, will be announced by the committee in due course.
