UP woman dies saving son from suicide attempt over liquor money

A 46-year-old woman was killed by a train in Uttar Pradesh's Bhadohi district while trying to save her 20-year-old son from an alleged suicide attempt, police said on Friday. The incident took place at the Indira Mill railway crossing in the Kotwali area late Thursday evening.

The woman, identified as Shiv Kumari, died at the spot. Her son, Vishal Rajbhar, sustained injuries and was initially admitted to the district hospital before being referred to the BHU Trauma Centre in Varanasi for treatment, police said.

Kumari, a resident of Chakbhuindhar village, had gone to a private nursing home in the city to meet her elder daughter, Pushpa Rajbhar, who had recently given birth to a baby boy. Vishal accompanied her, police added.

According to Kotwali SHO Shailesh Kumar Rai, Vishal had already consumed alcohol when he asked his mother for money to buy liquor. When she refused, an argument broke out between them. Vishal then threatened to jump in front of a train and rushed out of the nursing home, with his mother following him.

Quoting eyewitnesses, SHO Rai said Vishal stood on the railway track as a train approached. Kumari reached the spot and pushed her son away from the tracks, but she was hit by the train and died on the spot. Vishal sustained injuries in the incident.

After being informed, relatives of the deceased reached the spot. Police said many of them were allegedly under the influence of alcohol and officers had to persuade them to return home. The body was sent for post-mortem examination, and a case has been registered in connection with the matter.

The incident has drawn attention to the challenges of substance abuse and family disputes in rural areas, though police have not yet commented on any prior history. Officials have urged people to seek help for addiction and mental health issues instead of resorting to extreme actions.

Vishal is currently undergoing treatment at a trauma centre in Varanasi, and his condition is stated to be stable. The investigation is ongoing, and further details are awaited as police record statements from eyewitnesses and family members.
