Maharashtra Forms Task Forces to Curb Sonography, IVF Malpractices
Maharashtra has established special task forces to conduct rigorous inspections of sonography and IVF centres across the state, aiming to curb malpractices and enforce compliance with the Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (PCPNDT) Act. Public Health and Family Welfare Minister Prakash Abitkar announced this in the Legislative Assembly on Thursday.
The minister stated that the task forces have already begun a state-wide drive to inspect sonography and abortion centres. The move comes in response to concerns about unlicensed IVF centres and violations of the PCPNDT Act, which prohibits sex-selection and regulates prenatal diagnostic techniques.
To enable more effective and severe action against those involved in egg trafficking, malpractices by IVF centres, and PCPNDT Act violations, the government plans to introduce legislation to apply provisions of the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) to such offences. This would allow for stricter penalties and streamlined prosecution.
Abitkar also highlighted the increasing rates of IVF treatments and caesarean deliveries in the state, which he said are often unnecessary. He announced that new regulations will be formulated to ensure that IVF treatments are used strictly based on medical necessity. Stringent legal action will be taken against doctors, staff, and hospital management found violating these norms.
The minister was responding to a question raised by member Abu Azmi regarding action against unlicensed IVF centres operating in the state. The government's response indicates a multi-pronged approach combining inspections, stricter laws, and regulatory oversight to address the issue.
