Tamil Nadu publishes fee details of private medical, dental colleges ahead of MBBS counselling

Chennai: In a move aimed at bringing transparency to the medical admission process, the Tamil Nadu Selection Committee has published the fee details of self-financing medical and dental colleges. The disclosure is part of the ongoing counselling for MBBS and BDS courses and follows a Supreme Court directive mandating pre-counselling fee disclosure by all private and deemed universities.

The committee has instructed these institutions to clearly list tuition fees, hostel charges, caution deposits, and miscellaneous costs both on its own platform and on their respective websites. Individual colleges are also required to publish the same information to ensure that students and parents have access to accurate financial details before making their choices.

The fee structures posted show significant variation across institutions. Among State private universities, annual hostel fees range from ₹1.10 lakh to ₹3.25 lakh, depending on room type and amenities. Mess charges are listed between ₹10,000 and ₹18,000 per month. Additional costs such as development fees, university fees, examination charges, and book materials also appear, with one institution listing 'other fees' at ₹1,77,500 without specifying whether it is a one-time payment or a recurring annual charge.

For private medical colleges, hostel fees vary from ₹1,250 to ₹25,000 per month, based on room type and billing cycle. Mess fees range from ₹9,000 to ₹22,500 per month, with a few colleges charging less. The differences reflect varying facilities and institutional policies.

Education counsellor Manickavel Arumugam welcomed the publication of fee details, calling it a commendable step that empowers students to make informed decisions. However, he noted that certain aspects remain unclear. "For instance, is the transportation fee applicable to everyone, or only to day scholars? It is not clearly mentioned whether certain components are one-time charges or recurring annual fees," he said. He cited the example of the 'other fees' item and urged the Selection Committee to provide more detailed explanations.

The Supreme Court's directive was issued to prevent arbitrary fee hikes and to equip students with complete financial information before they lock in their choices. By publishing these details, the Selection Committee aims to reduce the risk of unexpected financial burden during the course of study.

Prospective students are advised to carefully review the fee structure on the official website of the Selection Committee as well as on the individual college websites. They should also check whether the listed amounts are inclusive of all charges or if additional expenses such as laboratory fees, clinical charges, and examination fees are to be paid separately.

The move is expected to benefit thousands of aspirants who appear for medical and dental counselling each year. With clearer fee disclosures, students can compare costs across institutions and make decisions that align with their budgets and academic preferences.

The Selection Committee has stated that it will continue to update the information as required, and any discrepancies in fee disclosure can be reported for verification.
