LVPEI Kicks Off School Vision Screening to Detect and Correct Children's Eye Issues

The LV Prasad Eye Institute's (LVPEI) GMR Varalakshmi Campus has started a vision screening programme in schools across the city, aiming to identify and correct vision problems among children.

Under this programme, trained eye care professionals are screening students for common eye disorders, including refractive errors, myopia (short-sightedness), amblyopia (lazy eye), squint, and other ocular conditions. Children found with vision issues are referred for comprehensive eye examinations, such as cycloplegic refraction if necessary. Those needing spectacles receive appropriate prescriptions.

G. Abhishek, Consultant Optometrist at the GMR Varalakshmi campus, said early detection and correction of refractive errors help children engage better in class, leading to improved learning outcomes. Children with other eye conditions are referred to ophthalmologists for further evaluation and management.

Alongside screenings, the LVPEI team held awareness sessions for teachers and parents, emphasising simple but effective measures to protect children's vision. These include encouraging outdoor activities, reducing unnecessary recreational screen time, and ensuring timely comprehensive eye exams if a child has trouble seeing.
