Lucknow-Kanpur Expressway Opens, Cuts Travel Time to 35 Minutes

The 63-kilometre Lucknow-Kanpur Expressway, India's first pilot highway project using automated road construction technology, will open to the public on Monday, 29 March 2021. Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari, and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath will inaugurate the six-lane access-controlled expressway.

The greenfield expressway is expected to significantly reduce travel time between the two cities. Commuters currently spend about 90 minutes to travel between Lucknow and Kanpur, often facing traffic congestion that can extend the journey to three hours. With the new expressway, the journey time is projected to be between 35 and 40 minutes. The road is designed to be barrier-free, with controlled access to improve safety and efficiency.

Travellers will be required to pay a toll to use the expressway. Officials have stated that the toll rates will be announced separately and will be higher than those on the existing route, reflecting the advanced infrastructure and reduced travel time. The expressway is built using automated paving and compaction technology, which the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) says ensures uniformity and durability of the road surface.

The project is part of a broader effort to upgrade the national highway network in Uttar Pradesh. The state government has highlighted the expressway's potential to boost economic activity by improving connectivity between the state capital, Lucknow, and the industrial city of Kanpur. The route will also ease pressure on the existing congested highway, benefiting daily commuters and freight movement.

Local residents and business groups have welcomed the opening, expecting it to reduce travel time and transportation costs. However, some have expressed concerns over the toll charges, particularly for frequent users. Officials have assured that the toll will be commensurate with the benefits of reduced travel time and improved road quality.

The Lucknow-Kanpur Expressway is the latest in a series of expressway projects across India aimed at modernizing road infrastructure. The government has emphasized the use of advanced construction techniques to enhance quality and reduce maintenance costs. This pilot project will be monitored to assess the performance of automated road-building methods for future highway projects.
