For decades, the wetlands and coastal stretches of Kerala have served as a crucial winter haven for migratory birds travelling thousands of kilometres from the Arctic, northern Eurasia, and Central Asia. Species such as the Greater Sand Plover, Tibetan Sand Plover, Northern Pintail, and Garganey have been annual visitors, arriving in large flocks between August and March. However, birdwatchers and conservationists who have monitored these seasonal visitors over the years report a gradual but unmistakable decline in their numbers.

According to long-term observers, the spectacle of vast flocks descending on sites like Vellanathuruthu in Kollam, the wetlands of Pavumba, and other waterbodies across the State is fading. While the exact magnitude of the decline varies by species and location, the trend is consistent with broader patterns observed across the Indian subcontinent and other parts of the world.

Ornithologists and environmental researchers attribute this decline to a combination of factors. One of the primary drivers is the loss and degradation of wetland habitats. Rapid urbanisation, encroachment, and the conversion of natural wetlands for agriculture, aquaculture, and infrastructure projects have shrunk the available resting and feeding grounds for migratory birds. Pollution from domestic and industrial waste, as well as pesticide runoff from nearby farmlands, further reduces the quality of these habitats.

Climate change is also emerging as a significant stressor. Shifts in temperature and precipitation patterns can alter the timing of migration and the availability of food resources along the birds' flight paths. Changes in the Arctic breeding grounds and stopover sites in Central Asia may be affecting the birds' ability to complete their long journeys successfully. Additionally, rising sea levels and changing coastal dynamics pose a threat to the sandy stretches and mudflats that species like the sand plovers depend on.

Human disturbance is another critical factor. Increased recreational activity, unregulated tourism, and the use of fishing nets in shallow waters can disrupt feeding and roosting behaviours. In some areas, the removal of sand from beaches and the construction of coastal protection structures have altered the very landscape that attracted the birds.

Conservationists argue that the decline is not just a loss for birdwatchers but a warning sign for the ecological health of Kerala's wetlands. Migratory birds play a vital role in maintaining the balance of these ecosystems by controlling insect populations and dispersing seeds. Their dwindling numbers indicate broader environmental stress that could ultimately affect local biodiversity, water quality, and the livelihoods of communities that depend on wetland resources.

Efforts to reverse the trend are underway in some parts of the State. Local birdwatching groups and environmental organisations have been conducting regular counts and advocating for the protection of key wetland sites. The Kerala government has also identified certain wetlands as protected areas under national and international conventions, such as the Ramsar Convention, which aims to conserve wetlands of international importance. However, experts emphasise that effective enforcement of protection laws and sustainable land-use planning are essential to ensure that these habitats remain viable for migratory birds.

The decline in winter migratory birds is a complex issue that requires coordinated action at local, national, and international levels. For now, the birds that do arrive continue to captivate those who witness them, but their presence is becoming rarer each year. As researchers and volunteers work to document the trend, the hope is that greater awareness will lead to meaningful conservation measures before these seasonal visitors disappear from Kerala's skies and wetlands entirely.
