Kerala Police Probe Social Media and Cinema Influence in Alappuzha Murder

Police in Alappuzha district, Kerala, are investigating the murder of a 65-year-old man who was allegedly killed by a group of minors, including his 13-year-old granddaughter. Investigators are examining the potential role of social media and cinema in the crime, but they have not yet drawn any conclusions.

The victim's body was discovered on Monday at his rented house. At first, police suspected a robbery-related killing, but the investigation took a turn when they uncovered an alleged conspiracy involving the teenager and three other minors. According to officials, the motive was to steal gold ornaments from the victim.

On Thursday, police said they are collecting scientific evidence in order to fast-track the filing of a chargesheet. The four suspects are minors, and the case will be dealt with under the Juvenile Justice Act. Officers added that they are analysing the suspects' mobile phone records, social media usage, and viewing habits to understand whether external influences played a part.

The district's Senior Superintendent of Police, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told reporters that the investigation is being carried out in a thorough and impartial manner. "We are looking at every angle, including the kind of content that may have influenced the accused," he said.

The victim's family, meanwhile, was preparing to perform his last rites later on Thursday. His body has been kept at the mortuary of Alappuzha Medical College Hospital after the completion of police formalities. Neighbours said the man lived alone and was known in the area.

The case has drawn attention to concerns about the influence of violent media on children and teenagers. However, child rights and mental health experts have urged caution, stressing that the investigation is at an early stage. They say it is important not to generalise or stigmatise the accused.

"We should let the legal process take its course. This is a tragedy for both the victim's family and the minors involved," said a child rights activist who did not wish to be named. "The focus should be on rehabilitation, not just punishment."

Legal experts point out that if charges are filed, the case will be heard by a Juvenile Justice Board. The proceedings are conducted separately from adult courts and are designed to focus on correction, with a range of reformative measures.

The incident has sent shockwaves through the locality, with many residents demanding better digital literacy programmes for children. Community leaders have called on parents to monitor their children's online activities, while also acknowledging that more needs to be done to protect minors from harmful content.

As the investigation continues, the police have not released the names of the accused due to their age. They have appealed to the public to refrain from spreading unverified information on social media.
