Kerala Police Book Hindu Aikya Vedi Chief for Alleged Hate Remarks
The Thrikkakara police in Kochi have registered a case against Hindu Aikya Vedi president R.V. Babu for allegedly making communally provocative and defamatory remarks against the Muslim community and its leaders. The case was filed in response to a complaint by People's Democratic Party (PDP) leader Ashraf Vazhakkala, following a social media post by Mr. Babu.
The post was reportedly made in the context of the Kerala Police's anti-narcotics drive, codenamed Operation Toofan. The complainant alleges that Mr. Babu's comments falsely linked the Muslim community to drug trafficking and terrorism, and defamed community leaders. The remarks were purportedly made after Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala sought support from a religious head for the anti-drug campaign.
The First Information Report (FIR) has been registered under provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Kerala Police Act, including promoting enmity between different groups, outraging religious feelings, disseminating false information, and causing public nuisance. Police sources confirmed that Mr. Babu will be summoned for questioning as part of the investigation.
The case underscores the legal framework governing hate speech and communal harmony in India. The authorities are expected to proceed according to due process, ensuring a fair investigation. Both the complainant and the accused have the right to legal recourse under the Constitution.
