Omar Abdullah Says J&K Statehood Fight Will Persist, Warns of Youth Agitation

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Thursday asserted that his government and the National Conference (NC) would continue their efforts for the restoration of full Statehood until it is achieved. His remarks came amid heightened political activity over the issue, with the Chief Minister also warning of a possible Gen Z-style agitation if the Centre's response on key matters remains unsatisfactory.

Addressing reporters after reviewing relief and rehabilitation measures in the flood-hit Rajouri district, Mr. Abdullah was asked whether more steps would follow the demonstrations held across Jammu and Kashmir on Wednesday. He replied, "Yes. We will continue our efforts until Statehood is restored."

The Chief Minister's warning about a Gen Z-style agitation reflects growing frustration among the region's youth over what the NC describes as the Centre's unresponsiveness on issues such as business rules and a reservation report. These matters, along with the demand for Statehood, have become focal points of the party's political campaign.

His comments come days after he and NC president Farooq Abdullah led a protest at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi on July 20, demanding the restoration of Statehood and constitutional rights for Jammu and Kashmir. The protest drew supporters from across the region and underscored the party's commitment to reversing the changes made in 2019.

Jammu and Kashmir was reorganized into two Union Territories—Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh—following the abrogation of Article 370 and the bifurcation of the erstwhile state on August 5, 2019. The move stripped the region of its special status and full Statehood, which had been a subject of longstanding political debate.

The National Conference has consistently maintained that the restoration of full Statehood remains one of its key political commitments. Party leaders have argued that the Union Territory status is a temporary arrangement and that the region's democratic and constitutional rights must be restored.

Wednesday's demonstrations, which took place in multiple districts, including Srinagar, were organized by civil society groups and political activists who support the Statehood demand. While the protests were largely peaceful, they highlighted the persistent discontent over the region's administrative status.

The Centre has maintained that Statehood will be restored at an appropriate time, but has not provided a specific timeline. This has led to repeated calls from political parties in the region, including the NC, for a clear commitment.

Political analysts suggest that the upcoming assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir, the first since the 2019 reorganization, could serve as a platform for the Statehood demand. However, no official announcement has been made regarding the election schedule.

Mr. Abdullah's latest remarks reinforce his party's stance that the fight for Statehood will remain a central issue in the region's politics. As the NC continues to press the matter at both the domestic and international levels, the coming months are likely to see further political activity around this demand.
