Kadapa Police Raid Illegal 'Kallapi' Powder Units Amid Suicide Spike
The Kadapa police, acting on a rise in suicides linked to a toxic substance, conducted joint raids on multiple illegal manufacturing units of 'kallapi' powder on Tuesday. The product, a hazardous chemical mixture often used as a cheaper alternative to cow dung for floor decoration, has been implicated in several deaths in the district.
According to officials, five factories in Proddatur were operating under the guise of producing turmeric and kumkum powder. The raids were led by Superintendent of Police Nachiket Vishwanath Shelke, with a team including local revenue, pollution control, factory inspection, and agricultural officers. The units were sealed and products seized.
Police data reveals that between January 1, 2025, and July 6, 2026, 19 individuals died by suicide in Kadapa district after consuming 'kallapi' powder. The substance contains 'Auramine O,' a carcinogenic chemical that can be fatal if ingested.
SP Shelke urged the public to avoid using this hazardous material as an alternative to cow dung, warning of its severe health risks. He also appealed to citizens to report any such manufacturing units to the authorities.
