Interpol issues Red Corner Notice against alleged Sambhal violence mastermind Shariq Satha

New Delhi: The International Criminal Police Organization (Interpol) has issued a Red Corner Notice against Shariq Satha, who is alleged to be the mastermind of the violence that rocked Sambhal district in Uttar Pradesh in November 2024. The notice, issued on the request of Indian law enforcement agencies, urges police forces worldwide to locate and provisionally arrest Satha pending his extradition to India.

The development marks a significant step in the investigation into the clashes that left four people dead and dozens injured. The violence erupted on November 24, 2024, when a mob attacked a court-appointed survey team outside the Shahi Jama Masjid in Sambhal. The survey was ordered by a local court following petitions claiming the mosque was built on the site of a former temple.

Police have identified Satha, a resident of Sambhal, as a key conspirator in the incident. Several First Information Reports (FIRs) were registered, and Satha was named in connection with charges including rioting, arson, and attempt to murder. A reward was announced earlier for information leading to his arrest, but he has remained absconding, raising fears that he may have fled abroad.

According to officials, the Red Corner Notice was processed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which serves as India's Interpol nodal agency. The notice is now active and accessible to member countries, allowing police to check Satha's presence and detain him if he is found. However, legal experts point out that an RCN is not an international arrest warrant; it is a request for cooperation among law enforcement agencies. The final decision on extradition rests with the country where he is located, based on its own legal processes.

The Sambhal violence drew widespread attention due to its communal undertones and the contentious history of the mosque. A court-monitored investigation is ongoing with multiple agencies involved. The issuance of the Red Corner Notice against Satha underlines the seriousness with which the authorities are pursuing the case. It also enables Indian investigators to track any possible foreign links or support network that may have aided Satha's escape.

While the RCN strengthens the chances of Satha's capture, it also imposes an obligation on the accused to face the judicial process. The Indian legal system guarantees a fair trial, and the courts will determine the veracity of the charges against him. The police have maintained that the investigation is impartial and based on evidence collected from witnesses, video footage, and electronic records.

Observers see the Red Corner Notice as a critical tool in cross-border criminal cases, especially when accused persons attempt to evade justice by leaving the country. For the families of the victims and the affected community in Sambhal, the notice brings hope that the alleged mastermind will be brought to justice. The authorities, meanwhile, continue their search for other absconding suspects and urged the public to share any information that could help in the probe.
