US to Impose 50% Tariffs on $20 Billion of Canadian Goods as Talks Collapse

The United States is set to impose 50% tariffs on $20 billion worth of Canadian products, effective early Saturday, after last-minute negotiations failed to resolve a trade dispute between the two historic allies. The move follows an extended deadline that had been set for talks to conclude.

According to the U.S. Trade Representative's office, the tariffs will affect approximately 5% of Canada's annual exports to the United States, covering a wide range of goods including hockey sticks, tongue depressors, and other everyday items. The two countries traded goods and services worth $880 billion last year, underscoring the significance of their economic relationship.

In a statement released just before midnight, U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said Canada declined to finalise the trade deal under terms agreed earlier this week. "Despite the U.S. offer to Canada to receive the best treatment of any major exporter to our market, new demands and walk backs of other commitments by Canada have upended the careful balance reached in the past days," Greer said.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney responded, saying "Last-minute changes in the U.S. proposed terms were unfair, uneconomic, and called into question the reliability of any deal." He did not specify which changes were introduced by the U.S. side.

The tariffs were initially scheduled to take effect at 12:01 a.m. Wednesday, August 19, 2026. However, President Donald Trump extended the deadline by three days to allow for further negotiations. Despite the additional time, the two countries could not bridge their differences.

The economic impact of the tariffs is expected to be significant for Canadian exporters, though the broader trade relationship remains large. Analysts suggest the political fallout may be even more substantial, as the dispute tests the longstanding alliance between the neighbouring nations.

Both sides have indicated a willingness to continue discussions in the coming weeks. However, no new talks have been scheduled. The tariffs represent one of the most aggressive trade measures the US has taken against Canada in recent memory, raising concerns among businesses in both countries.

Supreme Court Upholds Madras HC Order Striking Down Tamil Nadu Reservation Notification for Converts

The Supreme Court has dismissed the Tamil Nadu government's appeal and upheld a Madras High Court order quashing a State notification that extended reservation benefits to converts to Islam from communities already listed as backward. A Bench headed by Justice Prashant Kumar Mishra held that conversion alone does not make a person a member of a notified backward Muslim community, and that the notification created an 'artificial group' without the statutory social checks the law requires.
