Indonesia Bestows Its Highest Civilian Honour on PM Modi During Official Visit
Prime Minister Narendra Modi was conferred with the Bintang Republik Indonesia Adipurna (Star of the Republic of Indonesia, First Class), Indonesia's highest state honour, during his two-day state visit to the country. The award was presented by Indonesian President Joko Widodo at a ceremony in Jakarta on Wednesday.
The Bintang Adipurna is awarded to foreign heads of state and government for exceptional contributions to strengthening bilateral relations. It is the highest among five classes of the Bintang Republik Indonesia. The honour recognizes PM Modi's efforts in deepening ties between India and Indonesia, two nations that share close historical and cultural links.
During the visit, both leaders discussed a range of issues including defence cooperation, maritime security, trade, and investment. Several memoranda of understanding were signed in areas such as digital technology, health, and cultural exchange. The visit marks 75 years of diplomatic relations between India and Indonesia.
PM Modi expressed gratitude for the honour, stating that it reflects the warm and friendly relations between the two democracies. President Widodo praised India's role in the region and expressed hope for enhanced cooperation in the Indo-Pacific.
This is not the first time an Indian leader has received this distinction; former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru was also conferred with the same honour in 1950. The award underscores the strategic partnership between India and Indonesia, both members of the G20 and ASEAN.
The visit also included a cultural event and a meeting with business leaders. PM Modi's itinerary included a visit to the Istiqlal Mosque and a public rally attended by the Indian diaspora.
