India's first hydrogen train completes safety trials on Delhi-Jind route

Indian Railways has conducted a trial run of the country's first hydrogen-powered train between Delhi and Jind, marking a significant step towards green mobility. The trial, held on Friday, focused on evaluating emergency braking distance and oscillation as part of safety and performance assessments ahead of the train's planned launch.

Previously, the national transporter had conducted a trial run between Sonipat and Jind in Haryana. The latest test on the Delhi-Jind section follows the Railway Board's approval last month for the introduction of India's first hydrogen-powered trainset.

In a letter dated May 22, 2026, addressed to the Research Designs and Standards Organisation (RDSO) and Northern Railway, the Railway Board communicated its approval for a 10-car hydrogen train set. The board specified that the train will operate at a maximum speed of 75 kmph on the Jind-Sonipat section of the Delhi Division.

The hydrogen train, which produces only water vapour as emissions, aligns with India's goal to reduce carbon emissions in the transport sector. The trials are part of a broader initiative to introduce alternative fuel-based trains in the country.
