India-Pakistan Diplomatic Spat Erupts Over PM Modi's Seychelles Award

New Delhi, [Date] — India responded sharply on Sunday to remarks made by Pakistan's Defence Minister Khawaja Asif, who questioned the legitimacy of an international honour conferred on Prime Minister Narendra Modi by Seychelles. Government sources, speaking on condition of anonymity, criticised Asif's comments as uninformed and reflective of a lack of understanding of diplomatic norms.

The controversy began when Asif cast doubt on the 'Guardian of the Blue Horizon' Presidential Distinction awarded to Prime Minister Modi during his recent visit to Seychelles. The honour recognises leadership in environmental conservation and support for Small Island Developing States. Prime Minister Modi is the first recipient of the award after Seychelles revamped its national honours system.

In response, Indian government sources stated that Asif's remarks demonstrated ignorance and underscored the state of political discourse in Pakistan. The sources noted that envy and hate speech were poor motivations for such comments. However, they refrained from making personal attacks, instead focusing on the need for constructive dialogue.

The exchange is part of a broader pattern of tense relations between India and Pakistan. Khawaja Asif has previously faced criticism from regional leaders, including from Afghanistan's Taliban-led administration in November 2025, when he reportedly threatened military action against Afghanistan. At that time, Afghan Minister Noorullah Noori described Asif as 'mentally ill' — a characterization India's government sources also referenced, though they did not repeat the allegation directly.

Prime Minister Modi's award from Seychelles is one of several international recognitions he has received for initiatives on sustainability and climate action. The award ceremony took place during his state visit, which focused on strengthening bilateral ties and cooperation on environmental issues.

Both nations have a history of diplomatic friction, and this latest incident highlights ongoing challenges in their relationship. Analysts note that such exchanges often escalate rhetoric but rarely lead to substantive policy changes.

AICTE has ordered the closure of 58 engineering and technical colleges in India for 2025-26, affecting new admissions but allowing enrolled students to complete their studies. Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra lead with 12 closures each, driven by low admissions, faculty shortages, and infrastructure issues.
