India Launches Operation Amistad: Medical Contingent Rushed to Earthquake-Hit Venezuela
India has launched 'Operation Amistad' to swiftly deploy a medical contingent to earthquake-ravaged Venezuela, in a coordinated effort between the Indian Army and the Indian Air Force (IAF), official sources confirmed on Tuesday.
The operation was initiated hours after a powerful earthquake struck parts of Venezuela, causing widespread destruction and casualties. The exact magnitude and epicentre of the quake are still being assessed, but initial reports indicate significant damage to infrastructure and a mounting humanitarian crisis.
Under Operation Amistad — 'Amistad' meaning 'friendship' in Spanish — a specialised medical team comprising doctors, paramedics, and support staff has been mobilised. The contingent is equipped with emergency medical supplies, portable hospitals, and essential medicines to treat the injured and provide critical care.
The Indian Air Force has deployed heavy-lift transport aircraft to airlift the team and equipment to the nearest operational airfield in Venezuela. The Army’s medical corps has been tasked with coordinating the relief efforts on the ground, working alongside local authorities and international agencies.
This is not the first time India has extended a helping hand to disaster-struck nations. In the past, New Delhi has sent relief materials and medical teams to countries in the region under its 'Neighbourhood First' and 'Act East' policies. However, Operation Amistad marks a rare instance of direct medical assistance to a South American nation, underscoring India’s growing humanitarian outreach.
Officials stated that the decision was taken at the highest levels of government, reflecting India’s commitment to global solidarity. “We stand with the people of Venezuela in this hour of need. Our medical contingent will provide immediate relief and support,” a Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson said.
The operation is expected to last several weeks, with the possibility of rotation of personnel based on the evolving situation on the ground. The Indian Embassy in Caracas is in constant touch with Venezuelan authorities to ensure seamless coordination.
Venezuela, already grappling with economic challenges, has welcomed India’s assistance. Local media reports quoted Venezuelan officials expressing gratitude for the timely aid.
As Operation Amistad unfolds, the focus remains on delivering effective medical care to the affected population, with minimal disruption and maximum efficiency. The Indian Army and IAF have prior experience in disaster response, including during earthquakes in Nepal and Turkey, and are well-prepared for the mission.
