India and Seychelles reaffirm 'steady, strong' partnership as PM Modi visits for National Day
Prime Minister Narendra Modi described India-Seychelles relations as 'steady, strong and long-lasting' during a state dinner hosted by Seychelles President Patrick Herminie on Saturday, June 27, 2026. Modi is on a three-day official visit to the archipelago, attending the golden jubilee celebrations of Seychelles' National Day as the Guest of Honour.
'The friendship between India and Seychelles has progressed steady, strong and long-lasting, and together we will win the race,' Modi said at the dinner, according to a statement from the Seychelles President's Office.
President Herminie affirmed the enduring bond, stating: 'India has been a steadfast friend to Seychelles, a sentiment warmly reciprocated by our people and our vibrant Indian diaspora.'
The dinner was attended by External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, Seychelles Speaker of the National Assembly Azarel Ernesta, and Minister of Foreign Affairs Barry Faure, among others. The statement noted that Seychelles and India have maintained close ties since establishing diplomatic relations in 1976, with India remaining a committed development partner in infrastructure, defence, health, and maritime security.
Earlier, Modi handed over a 'Made in India' fast patrol vessel, Lespwar, to the Seychelles Coast Guard, reaffirming India's commitment to strengthening the nation's maritime security capabilities. 'The transfer marks another important milestone in the growing India-Seychelles partnership in defence and maritime security,' Modi posted on X. He added that it is the latest in a series of capability-building initiatives reflecting India's steadfast commitment to supporting Seychelles' security priorities.
Upon arrival at Seychelles International Airport, Modi received a grand welcome from President Herminie and a high-level delegation, along with a ceremonial Guard of Honour. The two sides are expected to review bilateral cooperation and exchange views on regional and international issues of mutual interest.
