IMD Issues Heavy Rain Alert for North Bengal, Flash Flood Risk in Multiple Districts
The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Kolkata has issued a weather alert for several districts in West Bengal, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds over the next few days. The alert follows the development of a deep weather system over South Jharkhand and adjoining north interior Odisha, which is expected to bring intense precipitation to the region.
North Bengal is the primary area of concern. Districts including Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Jalpaiguri, Cooch Behar, and Alipurduar are forecast to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall. Isolated areas in Jalpaiguri, Cooch Behar, and Alipurduar may experience extremely heavy rainfall exceeding 20 centimetres, increasing the risk of flash floods, waterlogging, and landslides. Authorities have advised residents in low-lying and vulnerable areas to remain cautious and take necessary precautions.
In South Bengal, districts such as South 24 Parganas, Bankura, Purulia, East and West Burdwan, and Birbhum are likely to receive heavy rainfall of 7 to 11 centimetres. Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and strong winds of 40 to 50 kilometres per hour are expected in East and West Midnapore, Jhargram, and South 24 Parganas. Residents in these areas are advised to stay indoors during adverse weather and avoid unnecessary travel.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has classified the weather system as a 'deep depression' which is common during the monsoon season. Such systems often bring widespread rain and can lead to localized flooding in areas with poor drainage. The RMC has urged district administrations to remain on alert and ensure that emergency response mechanisms are in place.
This weather event is part of the ongoing monsoon pattern affecting eastern India. While such alerts are routine during this season, the intensity of rainfall in North Bengal warrants extra vigilance due to the hilly terrain and susceptibility to landslides. The public is advised to monitor official updates and follow safety guidelines issued by local authorities.
