Delhi plants 50 lakh saplings, achieves 71% of 70-lakh target

The Delhi government on Thursday announced that nearly 50 lakh saplings have been planted so far against a target of 70 lakh under the annual plantation drive. The announcement was made during a mass plantation programme held at the President's Bodyguard (PBG) parade ground in the Central Ridge, part of the Delhi Mega Plantation Drive 2026 and the 'Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam' campaign.

The drive is being carried out by the Forest Department, Delhi Development Authority, Municipal Corporation of Delhi, and other agencies. Delhi BJP president Harsh Malhotra and Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa led the event.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Sirsa said, "What we have started is not just a plantation campaign; it is a long-term movement for the environment. People are coming forward voluntarily, and we are connecting them with the responsibility of planting, protecting and nurturing trees."

According to government figures, around 1.78 lakh people have registered for plantation on the campaign portal, of whom about 1.54 lakh have participated. Officials said that the saplings are being geo-tagged and monitored, and a QR-code-based system is being developed to allow citizens to track the growth of trees they have planted.

Mr. Sirsa also emphasised the emotional connect, saying, "Our resolve is not merely to plant trees, but to bring the people of Delhi together in this mission. We want every tree to be planted with a sense of responsibility and affection, just as we care for our mothers."

The 'Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam' campaign, inspired by a call to honour mothers, has gained traction across India, with several states participating. The Delhi government has integrated this initiative with its annual plantation drive, aiming to both boost green cover and foster a sense of community ownership among citizens.

The use of technology is a notable feature of this year's drive. Officials say geo-tagging of saplings will help in monitoring their health and survival rates over time. The QR-code system, once developed, will allow citizens to access information about the specific tree they planted, including its species and location, and even receive updates on its growth.

While the government has reported significant progress, the success of the drive will ultimately depend on the survival of the saplings. Environmental experts have often pointed out that planting trees is only the first step; regular watering and protection from encroachment are essential for these efforts to yield long-term benefits.

Scientists Can Now Trace the Damage a Single Coal Mine or Gas Project Will Cause

Scientists have released an open-source tool that estimates how much a single fossil fuel project will warm the planet and the specific damage it will cause, from heatwave deaths in Europe to coral loss on the Great Barrier Reef. The Carbon Impacts Tracer applies established attribution science to individual coal, oil and gas developments, weakening the argument that any one project's emissions are too small to matter.
