Heavy Monsoon Rains Claim Over 10 Lives Across India, Disrupt Normal Life
At least 10 people have been confirmed dead in rain-related incidents across the country as heavy monsoon showers continue to cause widespread disruption, officials said on Thursday, July 9, 2026. The rainfall has led to flooding, landslides, and damage to infrastructure in several states, including Delhi, Arunachal Pradesh, and Himachal Pradesh.
In the national capital, relentless rain inundated roads, uprooted trees, and caused traffic snarls across the city. Parts of Delhi recorded over 160 mm of rainfall in a single day, the highest in recent years. The downpour also resulted in the cleanest air quality in the city since September 2023, as pollutants were washed away.
In Himachal Pradesh's Kinnaur district, a 100-foot iron bridge was submerged after a river rose due to heavy rain. Landslides were reported in several parts of the state, blocking roads and isolating villages. Arunachal Pradesh also experienced fresh floods and landslides, with authorities on high alert.
Rescue and relief operations are underway in affected areas. The India Meteorological Department has forecast more rain in the coming days, particularly in the western and northern regions. Authorities have advised residents to stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel.
Monsoon season, which typically runs from June to September, often brings heavy rainfall that can lead to casualties and property damage. This year, the monsoon has been particularly intense in some regions, raising concerns about preparedness and infrastructure resilience.
