George Kurian resigns as Union Minister after Rajya Sabha term expiry

Union Minister of State for Minority Affairs George Kurian has resigned from his position following the conclusion of his Rajya Sabha term. The President of India, acting on the advice of the Prime Minister, accepted his resignation under clause (2) of Article 75 of the Constitution, according to a statement from Rashtrapati Bhavan.

Kurian, a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader from Kerala, was elected to the Rajya Sabha from Madhya Pradesh in a 2024 by-election. The BJP chose not to renominate him for the recent Rajya Sabha elections, leading to the end of his tenure on June 21.

In addition to his role in Minority Affairs, Kurian also held the charge of Minister of State in the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying. He was the only minister in the Union government belonging to the Christian community.

The resignation takes effect immediately. The development follows the standard constitutional process for ministers who are not members of either house of Parliament.
