TNEA 2026 Round 2: Tentative Seats Issued to 79,403 Candidates
The Directorate of Technical Education (DoTE), which conducts Tamil Nadu Engineering Admissions (TNEA), has released the tentative allotments for the second round of counselling for the academic year 2026-27. According to a press release issued on Friday, August 7, 2026, a total of 79,403 candidates have been given tentative allotments in this round.
The allotment process follows the conclusion of choice-filling, which ended on Thursday, August 6. Candidates who had registered for TNEA and participated in the second round of choice-filling were considered for allotment based on their rank and preferences.
In the general academic category, the authorities stated that 93,117 candidates were eligible for allotment. Of these, 68,388 candidates received tentative allotments. The horizontal reservation category, which earmarks 7.5% of seats for students who have studied in government schools from Class VI to Class XII, saw 11,015 allotments issued out of 15,466 eligible candidates.
The Tamil Nadu Engineering Admissions cell has made it clear that confirmation of tentative allotments is mandatory. Candidates who have received allotments must exercise the confirmation option on the official TNEA website by 5 p.m. on Saturday, August 8, 2026. The press release warned that non-confirmation within the stipulated time would lead to the cancellation of the allotment.
This year's second-round allotment numbers show a slight dip compared to the corresponding round in the previous year. Records indicate that in 2025, the second round of TNEA counselling saw a total of 80,650 tentative allotments, with 70,116 allotted in the general academic category alone.
The TNEA counselling process is the gateway for admission to undergraduate engineering programmes offered by government, government-aided, and private engineering colleges across Tamil Nadu. Candidates are allotted seats based on their performance in the higher secondary examination and the choices they exercise during counselling.
Those who have received tentative allotments are advised to complete the confirmation process well before the deadline. After confirmation, candidates may be required to report to the allotted institution with the necessary documents and pay the prescribed fees. Further details regarding the next round of counselling and reporting procedures are expected to be announced on the official TNEA website.
