Kerala's AI sentries show near-total success in deterring wild animals

An AI-driven digital sentry system deployed across six high-risk forest zones in Kerala has reported a nearly perfect success rate in repelling wild animals, marking a significant development in human-wildlife conflict management.

The system, known as 'Farmguard', was first piloted at Mankala in the Paruthippally range of Thiruvananthapuram. Over the past two months, it has been expanded to five critical forest fringe areas in Kollam, Thrissur and Palakkad districts. Field officials report an unprecedented rate of success in deterring animal intrusions, prompting the Forest Department to consider extending the technology to other conflict-prone regions.

The units operate as autonomous digital sentries, using advanced machine learning, night-vision cameras and high-resolution imaging to distinguish between animals and inanimate objects. Positioned along perimeter lines, multi-directional cameras continuously scan a radius of up to 200 metres. When a target species such as an elephant, wild boar, leopard, tiger, bear or gaur enters the monitored zone, algorithms identify the animal and instantly send alerts via SMS, WhatsApp and Telegram to forest officials and Rapid Response Teams (RRTs).

Thiruvananthapuram Divisional Forest Officer A. Shanavas explained the system's working: “The moment a target animal steps into the monitored perimeter, the system's integrated algorithms identify the specific species and trigger real-time alerts.”

To drive animals back safely, the device uses a multi-frequency acoustic defence system with more than 100 audio patterns and specialised frequency profiles. Since animals can grow accustomed to constant warnings, the system cycles through simulated threats such as machine gun fire, grenade blasts and crowd noise, along with low-frequency infrasound intended to mimic natural wildlife communication.

Residents of Chippanchira in the Kulathupuzha range say the past two months have brought a long-awaited sense of calm, as the new system has effectively blocked elephant incursions. Ward member Sheeba Sreekumar noted: "Earlier, elephants would wander onto our main roads, knock down boundary walls, and destroy our crops. Since the system went live, those incursions have stopped."

Forest authorities are currently deploying the technology to reinforce vulnerable gap areas rather than attempting continuous boundary coverage. In Palakkad, field officers have used the units to strengthen frequently used elephant entry and exit paths. Alathur Range Forest Officer Subair N. explained: "Since wild animals quickly grow accustomed to repetitive noises, it automatically alters the sound output, timing, and frequency during every encounter. This dynamic variation prevents target species from becoming familiarised with the device, effectively scaring them back."

However, officials also acknowledge practical and logistical challenges. The system works best on flat terrain with clear sightlines, which are not consistent across Kerala's hilly forest landscape. Dense canopy can affect solar power generation, and remote field conditions complicate maintenance. Dust accumulation and sensor wear require prompt technical servicing. While short-term performance is proven, long-term durability, upkeep and scalability across rugged terrain remain under evaluation.
