He is the third Army Chief to hail from the 2nd Lancers, one of the country's oldest armoured regiments, and the first officer from the Armoured Corps to hold the post in three decades, since General Shankar Roy Chowdhury served from 1994 to 1997.

In a separate development, Air Marshal Ashutosh Dixit, who was serving as the Chief of Integrated Defence Staff to the Chairman, Chiefs of Staff Committee (CISC), has been appointed Vice-Chief of the Air Staff. He succeeds Air Marshal Nagesh Kapoor, who retired from service.
