A magnitude 6.0 earthquake struck the Minahassa Peninsula in Indonesia on Sunday, the third significant quake to hit the country in two days, according to the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ). The quake occurred at a depth of 77 kilometres, GFZ reported.
India's National Center for Seismology (NCS) also recorded the event, placing the epicentre in the Gulf of Tomini. In a post on X, the NCS stated that the earthquake occurred at a depth of 68 kilometres at 21:55 IST on August 15, 2026. The coordinates were given as Latitude 0.174 N, Longitude 120.312 E, with the location listed as the Gulf of Tomini.
The earthquake follows two powerful tremors that struck Indonesia on Saturday. A devastating 7.7-magnitude earthquake hit in the morning, killing more than 40 people, according to CBS News. Hours later, a 6.5-magnitude earthquake shook the same region. The latest 6.0-magnitude event adds to a period of intense seismic activity affecting the archipelago.
After Saturday's major earthquake, authorities issued a tsunami warning and urged coastal residents to move to higher ground. The warning was later lifted when Indonesia's meteorological agency said monitoring showed no significant sea-level changes that posed a threat to coastal communities.
