Super Chennai's Community Vibes debuts in Medavakkam with music, games and crafts

Medavakkam residents began their Sunday morning on August 9 with a different kind of routine. The first edition of Super Chennai Community Vibes, held at Navin's Starwood from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m., brought together families for an experience that combined fitness, culture, creativity and learning.

The event, organised by the community platform Super Chennai, is designed as a neighbourhood-led initiative. It aims to move community engagement beyond large city-wide gatherings and into residential areas where people live. According to a press release from Super Chennai, the first edition saw enthusiastic participation from residents of Navin's Starwood as well as the wider Medavakkam neighbourhood.

The morning offered activities for different age groups. Families and children had the chance to rediscover traditional and native games, many of which are increasingly unfamiliar in urban settings. Children were also at the centre of several hands-on workshops, including crochet, live abacus and art. These sessions allowed participants to learn and create in an informal environment, with parents and children often working together.

The main stage added a festive atmosphere with a mix of contemporary and traditional performances. The popular music band Maayavisai performed for the audience, while a local Bharatanatyam team showcased its talent. Traditional Thappattam and Mayilattam performances brought Tamil folk culture to the fore, giving children and adults a close-up experience of these art forms. A dedicated music zone provided a relaxed space for residents to gather and listen.

The first edition at Navin's Starwood marks the beginning of what Super Chennai hopes will become a series of such community experiences across Chennai. By taking events to neighbourhoods, the initiative seeks to strengthen local bonds and encourage participation in cultural and creative activities.

For Medavakkam residents, the morning was an opportunity to connect with neighbours and share a common experience. The organisers have indicated that similar events are planned in other parts of the city in the coming months.
