From cashier to captain: Keralite Nishad to be first Indian to drive UAE's Etihad Rail train
Nishad, a 29-year-old from Alappuzha, Kerala, is set to become the first Indian train captain for Etihad Rail's passenger service. His appointment comes as the UAE's national railway network prepares to launch its long-awaited passenger operations connecting key emirates across the country.
Nishad will be among the drivers operating the newly introduced passenger trains. When the inaugural service departs from Fujairah to Abu Dhabi, he will be in the driver's cabin. His journey to this role began as a cashier, and through training and dedication, he qualified as a train captain.
He joins Emirati train captains Ibrahim Al Hammadi and Sara Al Mazrouei, who were the UAE's first national train captains. Nishad now becomes the first Indian to earn this distinction, reflecting the diverse workforce contributing to the UAE's transport sector.
Etihad Rail's passenger network is part of a broader effort to enhance connectivity between major urban centres, reduce road congestion, and provide a sustainable travel option. The railway is expected to serve millions of passengers annually once fully operational.
Nishad's achievement highlights the opportunities for skilled professionals in the Gulf region. His story underscores the importance of perseverance and skill development in achieving career goals.
