Farmers' Body Threatens Hunger Strike Over Delay in Canal Water Release

The Kalingarayan Farmers and Workers Welfare Association has demanded that the Tamil Nadu government release irrigation water through the Kalingarayan Canal by July 5. The association has warned of an indefinite hunger strike in front of the Collectorate from July 6 if the demand is not met.

The decision was taken during an emergency meeting held at a private hall in Solangapalayam to address the delay in releasing water through the canal, which is crucial for the upcoming cultivation season.

The association expressed strong disapproval of the Water Resources Department's failure to release water on June 16, despite adequate storage levels in the Bhavanisagar Dam. It also criticised the delayed response, noting that the Public Works Department had reportedly sent a recommendation to the State government on June 28, 2026, but no action has been taken.

Farmers allege that the government had assured them last year that water would be released on time after the canal was closed early for construction works. However, that assurance has not been fulfilled. The association urged authorities to release water immediately to allow farmers to begin cultivation and warned of escalating protests if the demand continues to be ignored.

The Kalingarayan Canal, an important irrigation source in the region, supports thousands of farmers. The delay in water release has raised concerns about crop yields and livelihoods.

Motive Behind MLAs' Resignations Irrelevant, Tamil Nadu Assembly Secretary Tells Madras HC

The Tamil Nadu Assembly Secretary told the Madras High Court that the Speaker is not required to examine the motive behind an MLA's resignation, as long as it is voluntary. The counter affidavit defends the acceptance of resignations of four AIADMK MLAs, arguing that the Speaker acted constitutionally and that the writ petitioner lacks a legal right to challenge the decision.
