8-Year-Old Girl Sexually Assaulted on Way Home from School in Tamil Nadu; Probe Underway

An eight-year-old girl was sexually assaulted while returning home from school in the remote village of Denkanikottai, Tamil Nadu, on Wednesday. According to police, the child was waylaid by an unidentified person, taken into a nearby forest area, and sexually assaulted.

The survivor informed her family about the incident, following which a relative alerted the Child Helpline (1098). District Collector C. Dinesh Kumar confirmed that a team was immediately dispatched, and the child was brought to the Denkanikottai Primary Health Centre in an 108 ambulance on Wednesday night. She was later shifted to the government medical college hospital on Thursday morning for further medical care.

Superintendent of Police G.S. Anitha visited the crime scene on Thursday. Three investigation teams have been formed to trace the accused, who remains unidentified. “We will issue a press note once the inquiry is completed,” Anitha said, assuring that the investigation is progressing.

This incident highlights the vulnerability of children in rural areas, where distances to school and sparse supervision can increase risks. Authorities have urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity. The local administration has also promised support to the survivor's family during this ordeal.

The police have not yet released further details, as the investigation is ongoing. Officials have emphasised that all legal procedures will be followed strictly, and the strictest action will be taken against the perpetrator once identified.
