'Equal Rights for All,' Says MP CM as Cabinet Greenlights Uniform Civil Code
The Madhya Pradesh cabinet on Monday approved the introduction of a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in the state. Chief Minister Mohan Yadav stated that the Bill reflects the constitutional principle of equality and is rooted in India's cultural values.
Speaking after the cabinet meeting, CM Yadav said, 'The Uniform Civil Code will ensure equal rights for Ram, Rahim, Ravinder and Robin — for every citizen of the state.' He emphasised that the proposed law aims to provide a common set of personal laws for all communities, replacing the current system of separate laws based on religious customs.
The decision makes Madhya Pradesh the latest state to move towards implementing a UCC, following similar steps by Uttarakhand and Gujarat. The Bill is expected to be tabled in the upcoming state assembly session.
Yadav clarified that the UCC would not impose any religion-specific practices but would instead establish a uniform framework covering matters such as marriage, divorce, inheritance and adoption. 'This is not about any particular faith. It is about ensuring that every citizen is treated equally under the law,' he added.
The Chief Minister also noted that the Bill has been drafted after consultations with legal experts and community leaders. He said the government had taken into account suggestions from various groups to address concerns about cultural sensitivities.
Political reactions have been mixed. Supporters argue that the UCC will promote gender justice and national integration, while critics contend that it could infringe upon the religious freedoms guaranteed by the Constitution. The opposition parties have demanded a detailed debate before the Bill is passed.
The UCC has been a long-standing promise of the ruling party at the national level and is seen as a step towards a common civil code for all Indians. The Supreme Court has also repeatedly urged the government to enact a UCC to ensure uniformity in personal laws.
CM Yadav asserted that the state government is committed to upholding constitutional values and that the UCC will be implemented with due respect for diversity. 'Our goal is to strengthen the fabric of our society while ensuring justice for all,' he said.
