EPFO Credits Rs 1.44 Lakh Crore Interest to 35 Crore Accounts in Single Process
For the first time, the Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has credited the annual interest for the financial year 2025-26 to its nearly 35 crore member accounts by July 15, ahead of the previous year's completion in September. This milestone follows the migration of all 123 regional databases into a single centralised national database, a senior official confirmed.
Labour and Employment Minister Mansukh Mandaviya had earlier announced that the interest of Rs 1.44 lakh crore would be auto-processed on the new portal and verified by field authorities before crediting by July 15. As of Tuesday, interest was credited to 30 crore verified accounts, with the remaining 5 crore accounts processed by Wednesday.
“This is the first time in EPFO history that interest has been credited by July 15. Last year, the process was fully completed in September after crediting 80-90% of accounts by July-end. In prior years, it extended until November. Now, interest crediting has occurred in one go,” the official said.
The key change was the merger of 123 regional databases into a single national database, involving migration of nearly 1,400 crore transactions and 1,700 crore records. To ensure accuracy, field officers compared old and new member ledgers, verifying opening and closing balances including interest. “We wanted everyone to be confident that the migration was smooth,” the official added.
EPFO manages assets of about Rs 32 lakh crore for 35 crore accounts, of which roughly 8 crore are active contributing accounts. The revamped portal, part of the Centralised IT Enabled Services (CITES) project, enables automated processes such as interest crediting, claim verification, and informing members of withdrawal amounts, aiming to reduce claim rejection rates. The portal was temporarily closed from June 26-28 for the transition. Since resuming, EPFO has settled nearly 11 lakh claims worth Rs 3,000 crore in one go, and expects to clear all backlog and current claims soon.
