September 2026 Money Alert: ITR Deadline, Milk Price Hike, LPG E-KYC and FD Rules Explained
September 2026 brings a mix of new rules, deadlines, and price changes that could affect taxpayers, LPG users, milk buyers, and bank customers. However, not everything being discussed as a “September 1 change” actually starts on that date. Some are deadlines that fall on August 31, while the Reserve Bank of India's new fixed deposit framework begins on October 1.
Here is a clear breakdown of what changes, when, and who it affects.
No more boarding pass stamping for international travellers
From September 1, international passengers departing from India will no longer need to get their boarding passes stamped at immigration counters. They can use an electronic boarding pass on their mobile phones or carry a printed copy. The move simplifies the departure process and reduces waiting time at airports.
Milk prices rise in Mumbai from September 1
Fresh buffalo milk supplied from Mumbai's dairy farms, known as tabelas, will become costlier from September 1. The Mumbai Milk Producers Association has increased the wholesale price by Rs 9 per litre, from Rs 93 to Rs 102. This revised rate will remain in force until February 28, 2027.
The association says rising costs of dairy animals, cattle feed, and fodder are the reason. Prices of several feed items have gone up by up to 25 per cent, increasing production costs.
Importantly, this is a wholesale price increase. Retail prices may rise, but the final price for consumers depends on individual suppliers and retailers. Not every consumer will see an identical Rs 9 increase. The timing also coincides with the festive season, when milk demand typically rises.
ITR deadline: August 31, not September 1
Taxpayers with business or professional income whose accounts do not require an audit must file their income tax returns for Assessment Year 2026-27 by August 31, 2026. This applies to those filing ITR-3 and ITR-4.
Missing the deadline may still allow a belated return, but late filing charges and other conditions will apply. This is a deadline, not a new rule beginning in September.
LPG e-KYC deadline: August 31
LPG consumers who need to complete Aadhaar-based e-KYC must do so by August 31. The deadline has been extended to the end of the month. Those who have not completed verification should check their LPG provider's process and finish it before the deadline to avoid issues with their connection or subsidies.
New FD rules: from October 1, not September
A common misconception is that the Reserve Bank of India's new fixed deposit rules start on September 1. In fact, the amendments to rules governing interest rates on bank deposits take effect from October 1, 2026.
The revised framework includes new requirements for bulk deposits of Rs 3 crore and above. Banks will need to publish applicable interest rates for such deposits on their websites by 10:10 am on working days. The aim is greater transparency in deposit pricing.
For ordinary fixed deposit investors, there is no new RBI rule starting on September 1.
Fuel and LPG price revisions: wait for official announcements
Oil marketing companies review domestic LPG prices periodically, often at the start of a month. However, any September revision should be treated as confirmed only after companies announce the new rates. The same cautious approach applies to petrol, diesel, and aviation turbine fuel prices.
What to actually watch
To summarise, the key dates differ by change:
• August 31: ITR filing deadline for eligible business and professional taxpayers; LPG e-KYC deadline.
• September 1: No boarding pass stamping for international departures; Mumbai tabela milk wholesale price increase.
• October 1: RBI's new FD rules for bulk deposits and interest rate disclosure norms.
Consumers and taxpayers should mark these dates correctly. Several social media posts may mix up deadlines with actual rule changes. Always verify with official sources before acting on any “new rule” claim.
