Digital leap: Computer access in Indian schools rises to 69.9%, internet connectivity to 67.4%

The Union Ministry of Education on Tuesday released the Unified District Information System for Education Plus (UDISE+) 2025-26 report on 'School Education in India,' revealing notable improvements in digital infrastructure across schools.

According to the report, the percentage of schools with computer access rose from 64.7% in 2024-25 to 69.9% in 2025-26. Similarly, schools with internet connectivity increased from 63.5% to 67.4% during the same period.

The data reflects a steady upward trend over recent years: In 2022-23, only 47.7% of schools had computers, and 49.7% had internet. By 2023-24, those figures climbed to 57.2% and 53.9%, respectively. The report attributes this growth to a concerted push for integrating technology into classrooms and supporting digital learning.

The Press Information Bureau (PIB) stated, 'This growth reflects a strong emphasis on integrating technology into classrooms, supporting digital learning, and preparing students for a tech-driven future. Enhancing digital infrastructure is a key step toward creating more modern and inclusive learning environments.'

The report also highlighted improvements in other areas, such as the number of teachers, pupil-teacher ratio, and reduced dropout rates, alongside better overall school infrastructure.

However, a previous report by NITI Aayog had pointed out that despite substantial progress in facilities like electricity, computers, internet, and smart classrooms, regional disparities persist across states and union territories.

The UDISE+ report covers over 1.5 million schools, 9.8 million teachers, and 268 million students, making it a comprehensive database on school education in India.
