Delhi's pollution crackdown: 33 industrial units face closure, 44 penalised

The Delhi government has inspected 2,011 industrial units between January and July this year, resulting in closure orders against 33 units and environmental compensation imposed on 44 others for violating pollution norms, officials said.

The inspections were part of a campaign led by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta to monitor industrial pollution and ensure compliance with environmental standards.

According to the government, 106 units were found to be non-compliant with prescribed environmental standards, while 78 were operating without a valid Consent to Operate (CTO) from the Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC).

“Providing clean air to Delhi is a priority for our government. We will extend all possible support to industries that comply with environmental regulations, but there will be no laxity towards units that violate the rules or pollute Delhi’s air,” Ms. Gupta said.

She added that action was being taken against other units under relevant environmental laws. “Our message is clear — industries that comply with environmental regulations will receive support and facilitation, but strict action will continue against those that pollute Delhi’s air,” she stated. The government’s focus, she said, is on controlling pollution at the source rather than merely penalising violators.

The government has also urged citizens to report pollution-related violations through the Green Delhi app or the Municipal Corporation of Delhi’s 311 app.

In a separate measure to curb winter pollution, Ms. Gupta announced that construction activities will be banned in Delhi from December 10 to January 20. Construction sites measuring more than 500 square metres will be monitored through the Dust Portal and AI-enabled cameras, with real-time alerts sent to the Control and Command Centre. Violations will attract notices and fines.

The actions come as Delhi prepares for the winter season, when air quality typically deteriorates due to factors such as stubble burning, vehicular emissions, and construction dust. The government has emphasised its commitment to enforcing environmental norms while supporting compliant industries.
