Delhi University Opens Spot Admission for 13,344 Vacant UG Seats

New Delhi: The University of Delhi has announced that 13,344 undergraduate (UG) seats remain vacant for the 2026-27 academic session, and has invited students to participate in a Spot Admission round through the Common Seat Allocation System (CSAS) portal. The move comes after multiple rounds of seat allocation, with the university aiming to fill all remaining vacancies before the admission process concludes on August 29, 2026.

The university offers approximately 71,600 undergraduate seats, with admissions based on Common University Entrance Test (CUET) scores. The first round of seat allocation began on July 16, and the academic session commenced on July 28. As of August 23, 2026, at 1 p.m., the vacant seats include 2,113 in the General category, 4,133 in the Other Backward Classes-Non-Creamy Layer category, 2,038 in the Scheduled Caste category, 2,476 in the Scheduled Tribes category, 1,791 in the Economically Weaker Section category, 566 in the Sikh minorities category, and 316 in the Christian minorities category.

Several prominent North Campus colleges, including St. Stephen's College, Hindu College, Hansraj College, and Kirori Mal College, still have seats available for B.A./B.Sc. (Hons) courses in science subjects, languages, and the B.A. programme. According to Haneet Gandhi, Dean of Admissions at Delhi University, most of the vacant seats are in the B.A. (Hons) courses in various languages, including Sanskrit, Tamil, and Bengali. “The Spot Admission round has been announced on schedule and we hope to fill all the remaining seats,” she said.

The vacancies at the end of the admission process come despite an initial surge in applications, with over 1.9 lakh students registering for UG programmes. In the first round, over 80,000 students accepted their allocated seats, and the university issued 93,033 seat allotments against 71,600 seats. However, many students withdrew their admissions, leading to the current vacancies.

Students who applied for CSAS(UG)-2026 but were not admitted to any college as of August 22, 2026 are eligible to participate in the Spot Admission round. The university has clarified that acceptance of a seat allocated in this round is mandatory. “It will be mandatory for the candidate to take admission to the seat allocated in a Spot Admission round if they have opted for it. Failure to accept the allocated seat in the Spot Admission round will forfeit the candidate’s eligibility for admission,” the university said. There will be no option to ‘Upgrade’ or ‘Withdraw’ during these rounds, and the allocated seat will be final.

Delhi University Vice Chancellor Yogesh Singh had earlier defended the CSAS-based admission process, describing it as more transparent, despite the persistence of vacant seats. To address this issue, the university had asked colleges to revise subject combinations in the B.A. Programme and increase seats in popular combinations for the 2026-27 session.

In a parallel development, the university has introduced UG admissions based on Class 12 Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) results, in addition to CUET scores. On August 20, 2026, it released a list of 11 colleges with vacant seats for CBSE-based admissions, later adding four more on August 21. By August 23, the list was expanded further, with colleges such as Indraprastha College for Women and Gargi College starting admissions to the B.A. (Hons) Sanskrit programme on the basis of CBSE results.

The university plans to complete the entire admission process by August 29, 2026. Students are advised to monitor the CSAS portal for updates and ensure timely participation in the Spot Admission round to secure their seats.
