Davangere Hospital Blast Triggers Dual State Probes into Oxygen Cylinder Safety
The Karnataka Health Department has launched two separate investigations following an oxygen cylinder explosion in the operation theatre of Chigateri District Hospital in Davangere. The incident, which occurred before surgeries for the day had begun, resulted in no casualties.
Health Minister U.T. Khader stated that he has directed officials to determine the exact cause of the explosion. Preliminary findings suggest a short circuit may have triggered the blast. "This serves as a wake-up call for us," Mr. Khader said, adding that he has instructed the Principal Secretary to conduct an audit of electrical systems across all hospitals managed by the Health Department.
Describing the incident as serious, the Minister said a high-level state inquiry committee has been formed to conduct a detailed investigation. Additionally, a separate district-level probe will be carried out under the supervision of the Deputy Commissioner. Both committees are required to submit their reports within 15 days, after which strict action will be taken based on the findings.
This incident highlights ongoing concerns about medical infrastructure safety in government hospitals. The dual inquiries aim to ensure accountability and prevent future occurrences.
