Congress Chief Kharge Criticises Government Over Treatment of Activist Sonam Wangchuk, Cites Multiple Cases

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Monday launched a sharp attack on the central government over its handling of activist Sonam Wangchuk's ongoing protest, alleging that the administration has been relentless in its actions against dissenting voices.

Speaking to reporters in New Delhi, Kharge listed several instances—from environmental activist GD Agrawal to farmers, wrestlers and victims of paper leaks—to argue that the government has not spared any section of society. He described Wangchuk's indefinite fast in Ladakh as a symbol of growing frustration among citizens.

Sonam Wangchuk, a climate activist and education reformer, has been on a hunger strike since [date if known] demanding statehood for Ladakh and other local rights. The protest has drawn attention to the region's demands for political representation and protection of its fragile ecosystem.

Kharge's remarks come amid a broader political debate over civil liberties and the government's response to protests. The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party has rejected the allegations, stating that the government acts within the law and that due process is followed in all matters.

Earlier this year, the government had similarly defended its actions during the farmers' protest and the wrestlers' agitation, maintaining that it respects democratic dissent but must also ensure public order.

The Congress chief's statement is seen as an attempt to rally opposition parties against the government ahead of the winter session of Parliament, where issues of governance and rights are expected to be raised.
