Congress Accuses BJP of Splitting Parties, Says 2/3 Majority Elusive

New Delhi: As the monsoon session of Parliament approaches, Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh has accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of attempting to weaken opposition parties through internal divisions. In remarks to ANI, Ramesh stated that while the BJP may succeed in splitting parties, it will not secure the two-thirds majority required for constitutional amendments.

Ramesh pointed to recent splits in the Trinamool Congress (TMC) in West Bengal and the Shiv Sena (UBT) in Maharashtra as examples of the BJP's strategy. However, he asserted that the opposition would prevent the ruling party from reaching the two-thirds mark. “Despite many efforts, they didn’t get a two-thirds majority… They’re splitting parties. But they’re not going to get a two-thirds majority… they will not succeed,” Ramesh claimed.

The Congress leader also suggested that the BJP’s real motive behind pushing for a two-thirds majority is to change the Constitution of India. He recalled the BJP’s pre-election slogan ‘Ab Ki Baar, 400 Paar’ during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, noting that the party fell short of a majority on its own, winning 240 seats. The BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) secured a combined 293 seats, well below the 362 seats needed for a two-thirds majority.

Ramesh further speculated that the government might introduce the delimitation bill and the ‘One Nation, One Election’ proposal during the monsoon session. He argued that these initiatives are part of a broader plan to alter the constitutional framework.

The monsoon session is scheduled to begin on [date], and political parties are expected to debate several key bills. The opposition remains wary of the government's legislative agenda, while the BJP has dismissed these allegations as baseless.
