China Praises Indian Military for Rescue of 12 Chinese Crew, Urges Closer Ties

China has expressed gratitude to India for rescuing 12 Chinese crew members from a cargo ship that caught fire and exploded off the coast of Kerala last year, while calling for deeper military cooperation between the two countries.

Rear Admiral You Jian, the Chinese Defence Attache to India, made the remarks at a reception marking the founding anniversary of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) on Tuesday. He highlighted the rescue operation as a symbol of shared humanity and goodwill between the two neighbours.

"We will not forget that, last June, the Indian Military rescued 12 Chinese crew members from a cargo ship that caught fire and exploded off the coast of Kerala," You said. The fire-stricken tanker had been adrift before Indian Navy and Coast Guard personnel undertook the rescue mission.

You also noted that China and India are at critical stages of development and rejuvenation, and that bilateral relations have returned to the correct path of improvement under the strategic guidance of their leaders. His remarks come after a series of meetings between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping, followed by engagements between key officials from both sides.

The Defence Attache further emphasised the role of both countries in UN peacekeeping operations, stating, "Both the Chinese and Indian armed forces have made outstanding contributions and great sacrifices in UN peacekeeping operations. We have always believed that the common interests between our two countries far outweigh our differences."

Expressing Beijing's willingness to deepen military engagement, You said, "We are willing to work with the Indian side to maintain communication through diplomatic and military channels, enhance mutual trust and promote cooperation through dialogue, and contribute to the well-being of the peoples of China and India." He concluded with a wish for the continued improvement of China-India relations.

The rescue operation and subsequent diplomatic exchanges reflect a gradual normalisation of ties, with both nations engaging in constructive discussions to resolve outstanding issues and foster mutual trust.
