Canada wildfires: British Columbia declares state of emergency as evacuations cross 20,000

British Columbia has declared a state of emergency as wildfires continue to spread across the province, forcing more than 20,000 people to evacuate their homes. The measure grants provincial authorities special powers, including travel restrictions and protection against price gouging, to coordinate rescue and relief operations.

Premier David Eby told a news conference on Saturday that a fire official had described the blaze as 'a bomb going off.' He confirmed that homes and properties have been destroyed, and that some residents became trapped as conditions changed quickly and needed to be rescued.

The affected areas include the communities of Summerland and Peachland, with populations of about 12,000 and 6,500 respectively, according to the 2021 census. Local authorities have issued evacuation orders for the nearby districts of Okanagan, Peachland, Okanagan-Similkameen, and the Snpink'tn Indian Band, as well as alerts in some areas.

Summerland Mayor Doug Holmes said that a number of farms have been affected, but it is not yet known how many structures have been lost. 'They're still busy fighting the fire,' he added. Hundreds of residents in care facilities, including senior housing, are being relocated to safer areas, according to Interior Health, the publicly funded health authority in the province.

The fire has also created challenges for residents with animals. Local broadcaster CBC reported that in Okanagan, many residents are struggling to evacuate horses. Some have left their gates open in the hope that the animals will find their own way to safety. Others have painted markings on their livestock to make identification easier later.

These wildfires are part of a larger pattern across Canada this summer. Hundreds of fires have burned across the country, with nearly 200 in Ontario alone in July. Smoke from these fires drifted into parts of the United States, including Minnesota and New York, and led to a diplomatic dispute. US President Donald Trump threatened new tariffs on Canada in response to the smoke crossing the border.

Officials have not yet confirmed the total number of structures destroyed, and efforts to contain the fire are ongoing. The state of emergency will allow the provincial government to mobilise additional resources and ensure that essential supplies reach affected residents.
