BJP's Nayab Singh Saini Rules Out Alliance for 2027 Punjab Polls, Says Party's Bond is with People
Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini on Monday ruled out any electoral alliance for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the 2027 Punjab assembly elections, asserting that the party's only commitment is to the people of the state.
Speaking to reporters in Chandigarh, Saini stated, “The BJP’s alliance is with the people of Punjab. We will contest the 2027 elections on our own strength and under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.” He dismissed speculation about a possible tie-up with any regional party in the state.
The remark comes amid discussions within political circles about potential alliances in Punjab, where the BJP has traditionally faced a strong challenge from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), and the Congress. In the 2022 assembly elections, the BJP contested in alliance with the Punjab Lok Congress and won two seats.
Saini, who previously served as a minister in the Haryana government, was appointed Chief Minister in March 2024 after Manohar Lal Khattar resigned. His statement signals the BJP's intent to strengthen its organisational base in Punjab independently.
Political analysts note that the BJP has been trying to expand its footprint in Punjab, especially after the formation of the AAP government in 2022. The party's performance in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections in Punjab is being watched closely as a precursor to the 2027 assembly polls.
Saini did not elaborate on the party's strategy but emphasised that the BJP would work on development and governance issues to win the trust of Punjab's voters.
