BJP Spokesperson Condemns Tamil Nadu Minister's Criticism of Governor Over Vaigai River Remarks
BJP spokesperson Narayanan Thirupathy on Friday condemned Tamil Nadu Minister R. Nirmalkumar's criticism of Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar, calling it 'unwarranted and politically motivated'. The remarks came after the Governor, during a visit to Madurai, expressed shock at the poor condition of the Vaigai River and urged youth to take up its restoration as a patriotic mission.
Mr. Thirupathy said the Governor, as a Constitutional authority, has every right to draw attention to civic and environmental problems. He argued that instead of welcoming the Governor's concern, Minister Nirmalkumar chose to attack him, claiming the Governor has 'no authority' to review government schemes or highlight such issues.
'By condemning a well-meaning call to restore a vital river in his own constituency, Minister Nirmalkumar is prioritising political ego and turf protection over the genuine needs of Madurai residents who suffer from water scarcity, pollution, and environmental degradation,' Mr. Thirupathy said.
The BJP spokesperson added that such statements deepen the divide between Raj Bhavan and the state government, hurting the interests of Tamil Nadu. He urged the Minister to focus on delivering results on Vaigai restoration rather than criticising those who highlight the problem.
