BJP names poll in-charges for UP, Punjab, Gujarat in run-up to 2027 Assembly elections
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday announced the appointment of election in-charges for Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, and Gujarat ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections. The appointments, made by party national president Nitin Nabin, will come into effect immediately, according to an official statement.
Vinod Tawde, a BJP MP and national general secretary, has been appointed as the election in-charge for Uttar Pradesh. Satish Poonia, also a national general secretary and MP, will oversee the party's election preparations in Punjab. MP Tarun Chug has been given charge of Gujarat. Additionally, BJP national secretary Satish has been named co-in-charge for Uttar Pradesh.
The party stated that in-charges for other states will be announced in due course. The announcement was made a day after the BJP unveiled its national organisational team, which included notable structural changes. Such appointments are part of the party's routine preparations for upcoming polls.
Election in-charges are senior party leaders who act as a link between the central leadership and state units. Their responsibilities typically include coordinating with local party workers, overseeing campaign management, and assisting in candidate selection. By naming in-charges well in advance, the BJP is signalling its intent to begin groundwork early for the electoral cycle expected in early 2027.
Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, and Gujarat hold significant political importance. Uttar Pradesh has the largest number of assembly constituencies in the country at 403, while Punjab has 117 and Gujarat has 182. These states are scheduled to go to polls in early 2027, although the Election Commission has not yet announced an official timetable.
The BJP's decision to announce the in-charges nearly a year before the elections reflects a structured approach to organisational preparation. The appointments are effective immediately, which means the designated leaders will begin their work right away, including coordinating with district-level party units and identifying key issues for campaign focus.
The party has not provided further details about the specific roles or any additional appointments. It has also not commented on whether the organisational team changes will affect the party's functioning in other states. Political observers often view such appointments as an indication of a party's strategic priorities, but the BJP's statement does not elaborate on any particular electoral strategy.
The announcement was made through a brief official release. The party has yet to announce the schedule for the remaining state in-charges. Further updates are expected as the election season approaches.
