Bengaluru to launch 'Safe Footpath' drive in July; minister warns against encroachments

The Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) on Wednesday announced a 'Safe Footpath Campaign' to be conducted from July 1 to 10, covering a 2,000 km road network in the city. The drive will be carried out in coordination with the Bengaluru city traffic police, officials said.

The announcement comes amid the ongoing '#1KmChallenge' this month, which encourages residents to walk for trips under 1 km instead of using motorised transport. The campaign aims to highlight the need for safe and accessible footpaths for pedestrians.

Following a meeting with GBA and traffic police officials, Greater Bengaluru Development Minister Krishna Byre Gowda stated that Rs 70 crore has been allocated for repair works and level corrections of footpaths across the city. He clarified that the funds would be used exclusively for repairing existing footpaths, not for constructing new ones.

Minister Gowda also warned against encroachments on footpaths, urging citizens and businesses to clear any illegal structures or obstacles that hinder pedestrian movement. He emphasised that strict action would be taken against those who violate footpath norms, as encroachments pose safety risks and inconvenience to walkers.

Bengaluru, a rapidly growing metropolis, has faced persistent challenges with pedestrian infrastructure. Narrow, damaged, or obstructed footpaths are common, forcing pedestrians to walk on roads and increasing accident risks. The new campaign is part of broader efforts to improve walkability and promote sustainable transport.

Traffic police officials noted that they will support the campaign by enforcing regulations against vehicles parked on footpaths and other violations. Citizens are encouraged to report encroachments or damaged footpaths through designated helplines or online platforms.

The 'Safe Footpath Campaign' aligns with the state government's focus on enhancing urban infrastructure and public safety. Minister Gowda reiterated the government's commitment to making Bengaluru pedestrian-friendly, with further initiatives planned in the coming months.
