NIA arrests alleged mastermind in Kerala illegal explosives case

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has arrested T.A. Harris, the alleged mastermind behind the illegal procurement and distribution of a large cache of explosives in Kerala. Harris was taken into custody from Manjeri in Malappuram district, according to agency officials.

The arrest is linked to the seizure of 89,600 gelatin sticks and 10,500 non-electric detonators from a hollow bricks factory compound at Chemmad, near Tirurangadi, on February 7, 2026. The explosives were found packed in boxes and concealed beneath sacks of onions.

Following the discovery, the case was transferred to the NIA after it emerged that the explosives had been brought without a licence. The agency took over the investigation, citing the potential implications for national security.

In a statement, the NIA said Harris played a key role in illegally procuring, stockpiling and distributing the explosives. His arrest brings the total number of people held in the case to ten. Earlier, three individuals were arrested in Karnataka, and several others were picked up during the course of the probe.

The NIA has conducted searches at around 19 locations across Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, leading to the recovery of digital devices and documents. The agency also searched quarry-related sites in Kozhikode, Kasaragod and Kannur districts before making the latest arrest.

Investigators are now scrutinising the recovered material to understand the full network involved in the smuggling and storage of the explosive material. Further arrests are expected as the probe continues.

The case underscores the heightened vigilance required to prevent the misuse of industrial explosives, which are legally regulated but are sometimes diverted for unlawful purposes. The NIA's involvement reflects the seriousness with which the central agency views such seizures, particularly in regions with a history of communal sensitivity.

Authorities have urged the public to report any suspicious activities related to explosives. They have also reassured citizens that all necessary measures are being taken to ensure safety and security in the affected areas.
