Bengaluru Metro Blue Line: First Trains by Mid-2027, Complete Airport Link by March 2028

Greater Bengaluru Development Minister Krishna Byre Gowda on Saturday announced a revised timeline for the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited's (BMRCL) Blue Line, which is being built to connect Bengaluru with Kempegowda International Airport. The entire line is now expected to be fully operational by March 2028, with commuters able to use parts of it from mid-2027.

The Blue Line is being constructed in two phases: Phase 2A from Silk Board to K.R. Puram, and Phase 2B from K.R. Puram to the airport. Phase 2A, which earlier had a December 2026 deadline, is likely to open by mid-2027. The Hebbal to Airport section, which is part of Phase 2B, is expected to open by September 2027. However, the stretch between Hebbal and Nagawara will be completed only in March 2028.

According to Mr. Gowda, the delay in the Hebbal-Nagawara segment is due to the complexity of construction, including the building of an interchange station. "Completing works between Nagawara and Hebbal has several challenges, including building metro stations, as an interchange station will come there," he said. Earlier, the full Blue Line was anticipated to be operational by December 2027.

The Blue Line is expected to significantly improve connectivity between the city centre, IT corridors, and the airport, offering a reliable alternative to road transport. For air travellers, this will provide a direct metro link, reducing reliance on taxis and private vehicles. The project is part of Bengaluru's efforts to strengthen its public transport network.

Trial runs on the line are set to begin soon. Mr. Gowda said trial runs between K.R. Puram and Iblur will start in October, and between Central Silk Board and Iblur in December. These trials are a standard prerequisite before passenger services commence, as they help test safety and operational systems.

The Pink Line, another significant corridor, is also set for a partial opening soon. The line spans about 21 km from Kalena Agrahara to Nagawara and includes both elevated and underground stretches. The elevated portion between Kalena Agrahara and Tavarekere, covering 7.5 km, is complete and awaiting a green signal from the railways.

Mr. Gowda said the inauguration of the 7.5-km elevated stretch will happen next month, subject to availability of Union government representatives and the Chief Minister. The underground portion from Tavarekere to Nagawara is still under construction and is expected to take about six more months. It is likely to be ready for operations after March 2027.

The Pink Line, which connects central Bengaluru, has been delayed by about one and a half years for various reasons and has cost around ₹12,000 crore, according to the minister. Its importance lies in providing metro access to central areas of the city, reducing dependence on road transport.

Looking further, Mr. Gowda stated that metro expansion would be carried out wherever feasible. However, to connect Bengaluru with nearby cities and hubs, options such as Suburban Rail and Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) need to be explored. This indicates a broader strategy for regional connectivity beyond the existing metro network.

The announcement provides clear timelines for the much-anticipated Blue Line. With partial openings expected in 2027 and full operations in March 2028, passengers will have a better understanding of when airport connectivity through metro will be available. Similarly, the Pink Line's phased commissioning will gradually enhance the city's public transport network.
