Closure of Lucknow's iconic coffee house raises concerns over shrinking social spaces

The Indian Coffee House at Hazratganj, a landmark in Lucknow for decades, has remained shut for the past month, leaving many regular visitors upset. The closure has also sparked concerns about the shortage of affordable social spaces in the city.

Vinayak Singh, a 42-year-old employee of Uttar Pradesh Jal (Nigam) urban, said he has been forced to spend over ₹1,500 each time he meets friends at a nearby café. “I ask friends to come at the Indian Coffee House, but on every occasion, we found it closed, forcing us to sit at the adjoining Café Coffee Day whose each beverage or snacks is at least seven times costlier,” he said. “When I call the coffee house number, they reply we will reopen soon.”

Mr. Singh recalled that he used to visit the place daily in the 1990s as a student of Lucknow University. “It was the centre of debate and deliberations with people from all walks of life spending time,” he said.

The coffee house, run by the Indian Coffee Workers Co-operative Society Limited, occupies over 700 square feet at the main intersection of Hazratganj. Its temporary closure has affected hundreds of residents who fondly remember it as a vibrant space.

Veteran political analyst Sharat Pradhan, who first visited the coffee house in the early 1970s, said it was a social space where journalists, academicians, students, politicians and professionals met as equals. “This shared space helped in imparting new ideas in society,” he said. Mr. Pradhan also recalled visits by former Chief Ministers Veer Bahadur Singh and Narayan Dutt Tiwari, former Prime Minister Chandrashekhar, and socialist leader Ram Manohar Lohia. In the 1950s, a cup of tea cost 50 paise, while coffee was slightly more expensive. The place also served pakoras and dosa.

A person who answered the official Lucknow number of the coffee house, without revealing their identity, said the shutdown was due to staff issues and that it would reopen soon.

Political commentator Ram Dutt Tripathi, who has visited the coffee house since the 1980s, said the closure may be linked to poor planning. “Staff could be hired any day. If they do not want to invest in catering, certain items can be ordered daily from nearby eateries. That will help run the coffee house with minimum cost, but keeping it open is the core issue,” he said. He added that Lucknow faces a broader problem of lacking social spaces where ordinary people can gather to talk, read the news, and debate public issues.

Mr. Singh also expressed fear that the prime location of the premises could be a factor behind the non-operation. “Every nearby eatery costs over five times what was offered at the coffee house, hence closure may be linked with vested interest,” he said. These remarks, however, remain a personal concern rather than an established fact.

The situation highlights the importance of preserving public institutions that offer affordable spaces for dialogue and community interaction, especially in a city known for its cultural and intellectual heritage.

Supreme Court Upholds Madras HC Order Striking Down Tamil Nadu Reservation Notification for Converts

The Supreme Court has dismissed the Tamil Nadu government's appeal and upheld a Madras High Court order quashing a State notification that extended reservation benefits to converts to Islam from communities already listed as backward. A Bench headed by Justice Prashant Kumar Mishra held that conversion alone does not make a person a member of a notified backward Muslim community, and that the notification created an 'artificial group' without the statutory social checks the law requires.
