Baruipur Girl's Rape-Murder: Police Examine Shack as Possible Crime Scene, Three Held
Investigators probing the alleged rape and murder of an 11-year-old girl in Baruipur, South 24 Parganas, said on Tuesday that one of the arrested accused is suspected to have taken the victim to a shack where two other accused were present before the crime took place.
“The three arrested accused are being questioned. We are awaiting forensic and viscera examination reports,” a senior police officer said. “An investigation is under way based on evidence from the spot, witness statements and scientific examination. We are verifying the exact sequence of events and the individual roles of each accused.”
The officer added that the accused allegedly consumed intoxicants before the assault. The preliminary post-mortem report revealed injuries on the victim, and investigators are awaiting the final medical opinion. “The accused allegedly attempted to dispose of the victim late on Saturday night. It is suspected she was kept inside the shack before an attempt to dispose of her. Circumstantial evidence indicates they tried to carry her in a plastic sack, but after it tore, they allegedly threw her into a nearby pond.”
Preliminary post-mortem findings indicate ante-mortem drowning, meaning the victim was alive when thrown into the water. However, a final conclusion will be drawn after forensic and viscera reports. Investigators suspect the victim had become unconscious due to injuries before being thrown. Police are examining the presence of water in the lungs and stomach in the preliminary report. The three accused left the area separately after allegedly disposing of the girl.
State Director General of Police Siddh Nath Gupta visited the suspected crime scene on Tuesday, accompanied by members of a Special Investigation Team. Describing it as a “sensitive case,” he said, “We will not be able to divulge much about the investigation at this stage. Let the probe progress further.”
On the allegation by the victim’s parents that police failed to act despite repeated requests after their daughter went missing on Saturday, the DGP said, “We will look into this aspect. If there are allegations that the police response was delayed, we will conduct an inquiry and take appropriate action.”
The victim’s body was found stuffed in a sack in Surjyapur Haat area on Sunday, a day after she went missing. The discovery triggered a protest by locals who blocked the Baruipur-Joynagar Road, burnt tyres and damaged police vehicles, demanding arrests. Hours later, a man was beaten to death by angry locals on suspicion of involvement in the crime.
