SAD-BJP Reunion Buzz: Akali Leader Majithia Cites Border State Security as Key Factor

Chandigarh: The political landscape of Punjab is witnessing renewed speculation over a possible re-alignment between the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The buzz gained momentum after senior Akali leader Bikram Singh Majithia referred to Punjab as "a border state", implicitly highlighting the strategic importance of the region in any future political arrangement.

Majithia, a former minister and influential Akali figure, made the remarks on Saturday, triggering discussions among political circles. While he did not confirm any formal talks, his statement indicated that the SAD and the BJP may find common ground on issues of national security and border management. He stressed that political parties must prioritise the interests of border states like Punjab, especially in the context of external security challenges.

The SAD-BJP alliance historically governed Punjab for over two decades, from 1997 to 2002 and again from 2007 to 2017. The partnership ended ahead of the 2020 farm laws protests, with the SAD quitting the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) over the controversial legislation. The farm laws were later repealed following prolonged agitation by farmers.

Since the breakup, both parties have charted separate electoral paths. In the 2022 Punjab Assembly elections, the SAD suffered a severe defeat, winning only three seats, while the BJP, contesting alone, failed to open its account. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) came to power with a landslide, winning 92 of 117 seats.

Political analysts point out that the BJP is keen to strengthen its presence in Punjab, particularly after its recent forays into the state's agrarian and social landscape. The SAD, on the other hand, is looking to regain its traditional vote base, which has been eroded by the emergence of AAP and the rise of farmer-centric politics.

Majithia's reference to Punjab as a border state is seen as a subtle attempt to underscore the relevance of SAD's regional expertise and its historical role in safeguarding the country's frontier. In recent years, the issue of cross-border infiltration and drone smuggling has occupied the centre of political discourse in the region. Political parties have repeatedly called for a unified approach to these security challenges.

Reacting to Majithia's comments, a senior BJP leader, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said that the party was open to "all possibilities" for building a stronger front in Punjab. However, he clarified that no official discussions have been initiated so far. The SAD, meanwhile, has maintained that it remains independent and will decide on alliances based on the interests of Punjab and its people.

Observers say a formal reunion may not be imminent, given the ideological differences that emerged during the farm protests. The SAD has repeatedly demanded a legal guarantee for minimum support prices (MSP) for crops, a stance that aligns with farmer unions. The BJP, on the other hand, has been cautious in making any such commitment.

Nevertheless, the border state angle adds a new dimension to the ongoing political calculations. As the 2024 Lok Sabha elections approach, both parties are said to be exploring ways to counter the AAP's dominance in the state. A revival of the SAD-BJP axis could potentially alter the electoral arithmetic, though significant hurdles remain.

Political observers will be watching closely to see whether Majithia's remarks translate into concrete developments. For now, the comments have succeeded in rekindling debate about the future shape of Punjab politics and the role of border security in shaping political alliances.

Supreme Court Upholds Madras HC Order Striking Down Tamil Nadu Reservation Notification for Converts

The Supreme Court has dismissed the Tamil Nadu government's appeal and upheld a Madras High Court order quashing a State notification that extended reservation benefits to converts to Islam from communities already listed as backward. A Bench headed by Justice Prashant Kumar Mishra held that conversion alone does not make a person a member of a notified backward Muslim community, and that the notification created an 'artificial group' without the statutory social checks the law requires.
